Collection Centre Pompidou, Paris — Musée national d’art moderne, gift of the artist, 2024 (inv. AM 2024-861).
The Wonder of it All carries Anne Spalter’s longtime themes — travel, exploration, outer space, and the unconscious mind — into film generated with artificial intelligence. Working phrase by phrase with early text-to-image models and a custom motion pipeline, Spalter steers a dreamlike passage through impossible highways, terminals, and skies. The score is by The Josh Craig.
The film was the title work of the solo exhibition Anne Spalter: The Wonder of It All at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (March 12 – June 12, 2022), and a still from it appeared in The New York Times’s coverage of AI-generated art. In 2024 it entered the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou.
“Although the essential content and themes of my work have been consistent over several decades, new technologies … are enabling me to investigate ideas in ways that would not have been possible with traditional media or even with previous digital tools.”
