Free Love Hang is a solo, artificial intelligence (AI)—inspired installation of long-time SPRING/BREAK participant Anne Spalter. Her charcoal drawings and acrylic paintings evoke a sensual garden of delights, complete with floating heart-shaped balloons. Says Spalter: “ I enjoyed engaging with this year’s Naked Lunch theme, which celebrates life—in contrast to the depressing news cycle. I wanted to find out if I could use AI to create a new ‘summer of love’.”

The imagery in Free Love Hang comprises a range of erotic figures, enmeshed in various forms of embrace, their limbs intertwined and merging into and out of the plastic surface of the image plane.

To create her artworks, Anne used exact phrases from the call-for-entry such as “depictions of social encounters, depictions of “the scene” and free love hangs–often al fresco”  and entered them into textual AI image prompts, sometimes mixed with other terms, such as “couples intertwined” and “rendezvous”.  After Anne observed the AI’s response, she then modified her prompts until final images were generated to her satisfaction. Intertwining both artificial intelligence and the human brain, the final art works thus result from a creative dance between the artist and technology. Anne thinks of AI as a truly innovative partner.

With titles such as “In love with Angles”, “Goddess Bacchanal”, “Dance the Night Away” and “Group Hug”  Spalter further emphasizes the positive emotional impact of her AI collaboration. Using the traditional media of charcoal, the artist contrasts ancient analog media with recent generative technology in her desire to take the viewer “as far as one can get from a computer chip.” In Free Love Hang, she channels the Renaissance’s embrace of individuality as well as that age’s focus on the merging of art, science and technology. The installation also invites the public to a playful photo-op opportunity, inspired by the free love spirit, visitors can pose for Instagram-ready pictures within the artist’s tumultuous love scenes, holding heart-shaped helium balloons and bouquets of flowers.
